Moving your handmade shop off Etsy, a step at a time
The makers who leave Etsy well don't leave in a day. They build somewhere of their own beside it, move their regulars across, and let Etsy become one shop among several.
1. Open a shop of your own
A website you own (Shopify, Squarespace, Big Cartel, WooCommerce) is the one place no algorithm can bury you or change your fees overnight. Start small: your best-selling pieces, your story, your policies. If you don't have one yet, Shopify (affiliate link) is a quick way to start.
2. Start a mailing list
Etsy limits how you can contact buyers, so a mailing list is how customers become yours. Put a sign-up on your site, on a card in every parcel, and on your ByHand page (add it under Shop details), so people who follow you can hear from you directly.
3. List on ByHand in minutes
Start a ByHand listing and paste your Etsy or Shopify address: we fill in your name, words, logo, cover and up to eight pieces for you. Add photos of your making, and a reviewer takes it from there. Your shop can point at your own site, your Etsy shop, or both, and every visit we send is tagged utm_source=byhand so you can see it in your own stats.
4. Take it to the markets
Add the fairs you've booked to ByHand and print your free stall card: a QR code to your page, so people who stop at your table can follow you and find you again. How to make the most of a fair.
5. Price for every channel
If your own site costs you less per sale than Etsy, you can price there a little lower, or the same and keep the difference. Either way, check your Etsy prices cover its fees with our Etsy fee calculator.
