How ByHand works

ByHand lists independent shops that sell things they make themselves, and we check each one before it goes up. You can browse without an account. You'll need one to vote for a shop, keep lists, comment on makers' updates or list a shop of your own.

What counts as handmade

  • You, or a small team you work alongside, make the things you sell.
  • Tools and machines are fine: a wheel, a lathe, a loom, a press. Factories are not.
  • No reselling, white-labelling or drop-shipping.
  • Prints you make yourself are welcome, from linocuts to your own artwork on your own printer. Designs a print-on-demand service prints and posts for you are not.
  • Small batches and one-offs are what we're here for.

Family-friendly, always

ByHand is for all ages. We don't list shops that sell adult products or show nudity or sexual content, here or on the site they link to, and the same goes for updates and comments. Spot something that shouldn't be here? Every shop, update and comment has a Report link. Read the community guidelines.

How a shop is checked

When you list your shop we ask for at least two photos or videos of the making: raw materials, work in progress, your bench. One of our reviewers looks through them alongside your site. No part of this is automated. We'll approve it, ask for something more, or explain why it isn't a fit. You'll get an email either way, and the reviewer's note appears on your account page.

Fast-track review

The free queue usually takes a few days. If you're in a hurry, you can skip it once your shop is submitted: pay £9 and it moves to the front of the queue, so a reviewer gets to it as soon as they can. You're paying for a place in line, not a yes: the same checks apply to everyone. Find the button next to your shop on your account page.

News from the makers

Once a month, each shop can post an update: a new collection, a market they'll be at, a peek at something in progress. Updates appear on the shop's page and in the news feeds around the site, and you can comment and chat with the maker underneath.
